Dr Antonio López-Pousa is a Spanish medical oncologist with more than 40 years of experience and one of the country’s most experienced specialists in sarcomas and rare mesenchymal tumours.

He is one of the founders of the Spanish Group for Research on Sarcomas (GEIS) and has served as President of the group. He has participated in and led numerous national and international clinical studies and is the author of more than 100 scientific publications and book chapters.

For several decades, a major focus of his clinical practice has been the treatment of patients with sarcomas. Dr López-Pousa works as part of a specialised multidisciplinary team bringing together medical oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, radiologists and radiation oncologists to jointly determine the most appropriate treatment strategy for complex cases.

Dr López-Pousa specialises in the diagnosis and systemic treatment of:

• soft-tissue sarcomas;
• bone sarcomas;
• rare mesenchymal tumours;
• localised and locally advanced sarcomas;
• recurrent sarcomas;
• metastatic disease;
• head and neck tumours;
• selected tumours of the central nervous system.

A particular focus of his practice is developing a comprehensive treatment strategy for patients with sarcoma. This includes determining the need for and optimal sequence of surgery, systemic therapy and radiotherapy, as well as assessing additional treatment options in cases of recurrence or disease progression.

Dr Antonio López-Pousa graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1976 and completed his specialist training in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology in 1982. Since 2006, he has held the position of Clinical Head of the Medical Oncology Department.

He was one of the founders of the Grupo Español de Investigación en Sarcomas (GEIS) and served as President of the group for several years. Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous national and international research projects and clinical trials, including studies focused specifically on sarcomas.

Dr López-Pousa is the author of numerous scientific publications and chapters in medical textbooks and reference works. He has presented at national and international congresses and has also been involved in medical education and teaching.

His professional memberships include GEIS, the EORTC Sarcoma Group, EANO, SEOM, ASCO and ESMO.
