On 30 September, the MCI team visited Agata at SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital
Agata and her mother were once supported by the Ksenia Saves Lives Foundation. Recently, MCI representatives were in St Petersburg, where the foundation gave them a small gift for Agata. All that remained was the nicest part — delivering it to her in person.
It was not a formal visit, but a warm, natural conversation about the doctors, Agata’s treatment, how she is feeling now, and how her medical programme has changed over the years. Her mother explained that Agata has been under the hospital’s care for around five years, and throughout that time the family has been supported by the hospital’s doctors and staff. According to her mother, the treatment is tailored to Agata’s condition, with a whole team of specialists involved in her care.
The conversation also showed just how dynamic the treatment of a complex patient can be. When the results change, the doctors reassess the situation and adjust the therapy if necessary. Agata’s mother explained that she takes one targeted therapy every day, while the medical team is now discussing the possibility of introducing another, experimental treatment option.
Decisions are not made by a single specialist. During the conversation, Agata’s mother noted that the lead doctor involves additional specialists and the general paediatric team whenever needed, so that each of them can assess the child’s condition from their own perspective.
Of course, this visit was not only about medicine. Agata’s mother was touched to learn that the foundation still remembers her daughter. Even after all these years, Agata received a simple but heartfelt gesture of care — a gift sent with warmth from another city.
We often talk about doctors, hospitals, medical documents and the organisation of treatment. But behind every such medical journey there is a particular child and their family. And sometimes our role is simply to stop by, bring a gift and ask: “How are you doing now?”
Agata, it was a pleasure to meet you.
