Your Patient Journey Begins Here

Our role is not simply to arrange treatment in Spain. Before you travel, we work with leading Spanish specialists to determine whether there are additional diagnostic or treatment options available for your specific medical condition.

Our aim is to ensure that every family has clear medical information before making what is often a significant decision.

Step 1. Sending Your Medical Documents

The first step is to send us:

  • identification documents for both the parent and the child;
  • the child's medical records;
  • a signed consent form allowing us to process personal medical information.

This consent is required under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Without it, we are not legally permitted to share medical information with hospitals in Spain.

Step 2. Medical Translation

Once we receive your documents, our team begins work immediately.

Within 24–48 hours, we prepare a professional medical translation into Spanish or English, depending on the requirements of the receiving hospital.

All documents are carefully organised into a complete medical file for the clinical team.

Step 3. Specialist Case Review

Your medical records are then submitted to the most appropriate specialist centre in Spain.

For complex conditions, cases are reviewed not by a single physician but by a multidisciplinary team (MDT), bringing together experts from different medical specialties.

The team carefully evaluates your case in order to provide an independent medical opinion and determine which diagnostic or treatment options may be appropriate.

We work closely with many of Spain's leading specialists. In most cases, the review is completed within one week, although responses are often received sooner.

Step 4. Online Second Medical Opinion

Once your medical records have been reviewed, we arrange a video consultation with the treating specialists.

The consultation typically includes:

  • the consultant physician or multidisciplinary clinical team;
  • a MedCare Iberia medical coordinator;
  • a professional medical interpreter.

During the consultation you will have the opportunity to discuss:

  • confirmation or clarification of the diagnosis;
  • recommended treatment options;
  • innovative therapies, where appropriate;
  • whether additional investigations are required;
  • the proposed treatment timeline;
  • the expected duration of your stay in Spain;
  • an estimated cost of treatment.

Before the consultation, your MedCare Iberia coordinator will help you prepare your questions so that you can make the most of the discussion.

If Additional Information Is Required

Occasionally, the clinical team may require further information before providing a final recommendation.

Depending on your individual case, the hospital may request:

  • recent laboratory results;
  • additional diagnostic investigations;
  • MRI or CT imaging;
  • biopsy material, including pathology slides or paraffin tissue blocks;
  • further medical documentation.

This is a normal part of evaluating complex medical cases and helps specialists make the most informed recommendations possible.

Your Personalised Treatment Plan

Following the consultation, the clinical team prepares:

  • a written medical opinion;
  • treatment recommendations;
  • an individualised treatment plan;
  • a preliminary cost estimate.

All medical documents are translated into Russian, and our coordinators explain each recommendation in detail.

The decision about whether to proceed with treatment is always yours.

Why We Work This Way

In many countries, patients are encouraged to travel first and discuss treatment options only after arriving at the hospital.

We believe there is a better approach.

Before travelling, every family should understand:

  • whether the hospital is likely to offer additional treatment options;
  • what those options may be;
  • how long treatment is expected to take;
  • the estimated cost;
  • and whether travelling abroad is likely to provide a meaningful benefit.

This approach helps families avoid unnecessary travel, additional expense and unrealistic expectations.

It is particularly important when caring for children with complex medical conditions.

We do not believe a child should undertake a long international journey only to discover after arrival that no additional treatment options are available.

For this reason, Spanish specialists review all available medical information before any decision is made about treatment in Spain.

Supporting You at Every Stage

If you decide to pursue treatment in Spain, the MedCare Iberia team will support you throughout your journey:

  • from your first enquiry;
  • through the medical review process;
  • during treatment in Spain;
  • and after you return home.

Our goal is to make every stage of the process as clear, reassuring and straightforward as possible for you and your family.

Our Commitment to Honest Advice

We do not recommend treatment abroad if Spain is unlikely to offer additional clinical benefit beyond the care a patient is already receiving.

If the specialists reviewing your case believe that treatment in Spain would not improve your available options, we will tell you openly.

For us, providing honest, evidence-based guidance is more important than arranging a journey that is unlikely to benefit the patient.
